I am thinking now that the piece is just too large, that the staircase part should be the primary "real estate" and the quilting the accent. In the first, the brightness of the doorway draws my eye away from the dancer. It's a pleasing doorway, but it beckons the eye, because of color, value, and the doorway concept. I agree that the third one seems a bit empty. The chair in the second adds a bit of balance, so the dancer becomes the central figure. I prefer the second one.
