I would add that while trying new avenues and techniques is important to one’s growth as an artist, it’s not necessary to publicly show all of one’s efforts. I’m working on a series that will probably be five pieces, but that doesn’t mean I’m limiting myself to making just five pieces and hoping they work together. I’ll most probably make at least eight before I can edit down to the five most cohesive.

I’m not as far as you in my journey, but I keep asking myself a lot of the same questions. Your last few really resonate with me. I came to the same conclusion about painting — if I were to paint fabric, then I might as well be painting on canvas. I had that opportunity, but didn’t like it as much as constructing with paper or sewing with commercial fabrics. I decided that referencing traditional quilts was an important part of both my voice and the medium I’ve chosen to work with.

i’m on the same quest, and i too joined visioning project as a step in the process. i remember your quilt Jordan… can’t remember where, but i’ve seen it. anyhow, i have LOTS of thoughts on this topic. would love to hear more as your thoughts progress on making your work art.

Kudos to you for making the effort to look at your goals and your art so honestly. And THANK YOU for sharing your insight with the rest of us. No, you don’t offend me in the least by saying the art quilt world is insular — I’m in complete agreement, and see how it’s bubble can protect one against the conundrum you face by casting your net into the wider world. Personally, I’m at the looking for validation in invitationals phase, but lurking beneath the surface is the eternal question of whether or not I’m actually making art. My answer so far has been to tell myself it doesn’t matter, but maybe one day it will. I wish you luck on your quest!

just watched the show the other day. i found it fascinating, not too impressed with the talent, but very intrigued by the critics and their discussions. this is the art world that i know nothing about, and I’m sure that this is not the way to learn about it, but at least its a glimpse. going to give this show a chance for another few episodes and see how it goes…
